An e-Newsletter from the Delaware
Health Information Network
Nanticoke Memorial Hospital
Launch Brings
Delaware Hospital Participation to 100%
What
a present! This May, as DHIN celebrates its 6th birthday,
Nanticoke Memorial Hospital will be much more than
the icing on the cake. With Nanticoke results being
delivered for the first time through DHIN, May 2013
will represent the first month where all Delaware
acute care facilities are posting results to the state's
health information exchange. Another great "first"
for the First State, as Delaware becomes the only
state to have 100% of medical results from acute care
hospitals available on its statewide network.
"Nanticoke Memorial Hospital has become a great partner
and is a terrific addition to the DHIN," said DHIN
Executive Director Jan Lee. "Representing the southwestern
portion of the state in Sussex County, it serves the
community of Seaford and the surrounding area. We
are very pleased to have Nanticoke on board and excited
we can announce 100% of Delaware acute care hospitals
now delivering results through DHIN."
Award-winning Nanticoke Memorial Hospital has a medical
staff of 120 active and community affiliate physicians
who provide care in nearly 40 specialties; a nationally
certified stroke program that is designated a Primary
Stroke Center by the Joint Commission; a recognized
cardiology program; comprehensive cancer care center;
and a Level III Trauma Center. For more information,

DHIN Welcomes Two Imaging
Facilities This Month
Two medical imaging facilities on opposite
ends of the state begin sending results through DHIN
this month. Ocean Medical Imaging (OMI) went live
at the end of April while Diagnostic Imaging Associates
(DIA) will begin sending reports through DHIN in May.
Established
just four years ago, OMI serves greater Sussex County
from its central location in the Milton Medical Park.
In addition to founding his growing imaging facility,
Jonathan L. Patterson, MD, also achieved some unexpected
fame throughout the region last year by appearing
on the cover of Delaware Today Magazine's "Top Docs"
southern Delaware edition.
Diagnostic
Imaging Associates, with locations in New Castle County,
was founded in 1984 by local physicians Joseph Peacock,
MD and
Ka-Khy Tze, MD. Nearly 30 years later, DIA has expanded
to seven locations, with 14 radiologists and over
100 employees.
"While Diagnostic Imaging Associates has always strived
to provide the best imaging services in Delaware,
our main focus has been to meet the needs of our community,"
says Dr. Peacock. "And, to do that, faster access
to medical records is increasingly important. By joining
DHIN, our medical reports will be added to the network
for timely access by health care providers."
Since the fall of 2011, DHIN has more than doubled
the number of data senders, going from seven to 18.
The number is expected to continue to keep growing
throughout 2013. Prior to September 2012, there were
no radiology firms sending results in to DHIN and
now there are five (Papastavros Associates, Tristate
Imaging Group, Mid-Delaware Imaging, Ocean Medical
and Delaware Diagnostic Group.) DHIN renews it commitment
to further enrich the types of medical information
and results types available to Delaware's healthcare
providers.

INTERNET
EVOLUTION
On April 22, Mansur Hasib profiled
DHIN, stating "(DHIN) is viewed by
many as a template for HIE success."

"Delaware: An
HIE Leader in ROI Performance & Design"
Written by Mansur Hasib
Despite an initial round of federal
funding to develop state health information
exchanges (HIEs)
as part of Obamacare, these clearinghouses
were challenged to develop a financially
sustainable model. Because it addressed
sustainability early, the Delaware
Health Information Network is viewed
by many as a template for HIE success.
Delaware recognized early on that
being a pure exchange would not provide
sufficient financial value for hospitals
and healthcare providers, Michael
Sims, CFO, told me when we met recently
at the World Health Congress 2013.
In fact, the state's HIE needed to
provide services that went far beyond
data transport; it had to replace
other costly service alternatives
for providers so it would be a win
for everyone.
DHIN must enroll and engage as many
of the Delaware provider population
as possible into the HIE. Enrollment
meant providers could receive timely
and accurate results, which could
also be fed into their electronic
health records -- thereby optimizing
patient care management in an extremely
cost-effective way. The HIE planned
to pursue volume and drive down the
cost per transaction so low that it
would be too attractive for physicians
and practices to turn down. In fact,
DHIN drove down the cost of each transaction
to a mere 25 cents.
