Health Information Technology (HIT) –According to HRSA, Health Information Technology (HIT) is "the use of information and communication technology in health care. Health Information Technology can include:
- electronic health records
- personal health records
- email communication
- clinical alerts and reminders
- computerized decision support systems
- hand-heald devices
- other technologies that store, protect, retrieve and transfer clinical, administrative, and financial information electronically within health care settings
Health Information Exchange (HIE) – A HIE is the electronic movement of health-related information among organizations according to nationally-recognized standards. DHIN is the first state-wide HIE.
Electronic Medical Record (EMR) – An EMR is an electronic record of health-related information on an individual that can be created, managed and consulted by authorized providers and staff within one health care practice or organization such as a hospital or pharmacy.
Electronic Health Record (EHR) An electronic health record is created when an individual’s data from multiple EMR’s and other systems such as hospital systems, private practices, laboratories and pharmacies are merged together as a more comprehensive single record.
Personal Health Record (PHR) An personal health record is a summary of the health and medical history of an individual that is gathered and edited by multiple sources including hospitals, providers and the patient. The main difference between an EHR, EMR and a PHR is that a consumer can control what is in the PHR file.
